Research and Innovation

To achieve and maintain the University’s vision and mission, the research and innovation division contributes mainly by promoting the research related goal of the institution which is: to drive growth in UNIZULU research and Innovation

Tuesday, 30 November 2021, will see University of Zululand (UNIZULU) researchers lauded for their dedication to growing the institution’s research output during the highly-anticipated 2021 Research Awards gala dinner.

The awards ceremonies, organised by the Research and Innovation Office, take place annually as a way of honouring the research strides taken by scholars.

Further expounding on the purpose of the event, Acting Director: Research and Innovation Dr Nokukhanya Jili said: “The purpose of these awards is to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the University of Zululand research community and also to encourage them to be more active in research so that UNIZULU can continuously increase research output.”

The evening will celebrate winners across seven categories, namely Service and Development; Next Generation; Established Researchers; Departments; Special Categories; Research Entities (Chairs / RNAs / Centres); and Prestige Awards.

Among the notable awards are the Faculty Service Award. In this category, faculties each submit the name of one researcher (other than the dean or deputy dean) who has contributed to administration or promotion of research and postgraduate studies within the faculty. The said individual must have chaired research committees, conducted workshops and/or participated in research administration.

The Creative Arts Award is another prestigious award. This is awarded to a person with evidenced success in non-traditional research, in the literary and/or creative arts fields, and includes works of fiction. Creative work previously nominated (except winners) may be re-nominated. Nominations need to be seconded and should include a letter of nomination stating why the nominator is recommending the creative work for this award; a copy of or supporting portfolio for the creative work (as appropriate); and information regarding peer review and/or information regarding public response to the work.
